Homer Lockett Remembrance Scholarship

The Homer Lockett Remembrance Scholarship was established in June 2023. The Remembrance award is named in the honor of Homer Lockett, who retired as an Alliance High School mathematics educator and was a U.S. Army veteran. The one-time $1000 scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to Black Alliance-area graduating senior students who in their pursuit of higher education have demonstrated excellence in academics or extracurriculars.

Homer L. Lockett, Jr. was born, July 10, 1931, and died, October 12, 2004. Homer served his country in the U. S. Army as a First Lieutenant, retiring in 1956 when he was presented with the National Defense Service Medal as Infantry Commander. Homer would later attend Wilberforce University where he also played Varsity basketball. Homer graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Wilberforce University spending the majority of his career employed in the field of education, working as both a Principal and a Mathematics instructor. He retired after many years of dedicated service as a Mathematics instructor at Alliance High School. Homer was also a member of St. Luke's A.M.E. Church in Alliance, where he served faithfully. Homer was an active participant in several civic and social organizations. His many accomplishments include serving as Past Master, Worship Master, and Right Worshipful Assistant Grand Marshall from 1965 until 1975 with Mount Olive Masonic Lodge #66, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. Homer also served as Exalted Ruler of Cantell Lodge #1417, Alliance, OH of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order Elks of the World, Inc. He was also a member of the Past Exalted Rulers Council #15 - Ohio Northern District and the Harriet Bowie Shrine of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, Inc. Homer was also an athletics’ official and referee.
