Art & Dr. Gloria Malone Memorial Scholarship
The Memorial award is named in honor of Art Malone who was an U.S. Army veteran and head of the business department & coordinator of the Cooperative Office Education program at Alliance High School and his wife, Dr. Gloria Malone who was one of the first African American teachers to be hired in Stark County and the first African American faculty member at Mount Union College. The one-time $1500 scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors in the Alliance-area planning to attend an accredited college, university, or training school.

Art Malone
Arthur A. Malone was born, May 18, 1925, and died, April 1, 2014. Art, as he was affectionately known, was an educator and a U.S. Army veteran. He was past President of the Alliance Education Association, past Secretary of the Ohio Business Teachers Association, and a life member of the National Education Association. A former Kiwanian Art also served on several area Boards including the YMCA, the Family Counseling Service, and the Stark County Health Department. Art was a 62-year member of Second Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board. In addition to being a charter member of the Alliance Area Negro History Club, Art was past Commander of the Louis Dixon Post of the American Legion; member of the William Taylor Post; past Master of Mount Olive Lodge #66, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons; past High Priest of Mackey Chapter #43, Royal Arch Masons; past Potentate of Al Kaf Temple #109, Shriners of Akron; member of Bezaleel Consistory #15 of Cleveland, OH; Grand Inspector General of the United Supreme Council - Northern Jurisdiction, Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; past Patron of Starlite Chapter #83, Ohio Eastern Stars; and past Exalted Ruler of Cantell Lodge #1417, Improved Benevolent Protective Order Elks of the World, Inc. Art was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Art possessed a sincere love for education and was heavily invested in his community.


Dr. Gloria Malone
Dr. Gloria S. Malone was born May 12, 1928, and died June 16, 2023. A product of the Alliance public schools, she received her Bachelor of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Central State University where she met her future husband, Art, whom she married on July 23, 1949. Gloria earned her Master of Education, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at Kent State University. She was one of the first African American teachers to be hired in Stark County. Dr. Malone taught at Franklin Elementary School and the Alliance High School. In her final year at AHS, she was named Teacher of the Year. She was the first African American faculty member at Mount Union College. Dr. Malone was a member of the English Department and served as Chairman until her retirement. She was twice designated as Alliance’s Citizen of the Year; in 1986 by Mayor Francis Carr and in 2005 by Mayor Toni Middleton. In 2007, she received the Athena Award from the Women’s Division of the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce. Fraternally, she was a member of Bezaleel Assembly No. 19, Order of the Golden Circle in Cleveland, a past matron of Starlite Chapter No. 83, Order of Eastern Star and a Past Grand Worthy Matron of Amaranth Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, state of Ohio.
